Movie Review: “The Angry Birds Movie”

It seems that this year is a popular one for video game adaptations. The mediocre “Ratchet and Clank” came out last month and the “Warcraft” movie will be coming out next month. “The Angry Birds Movie” is the current video game adaptation that is out in theaters now.

The strongest aspect of “The Angry Birds Movie” is its animation. There was a lot of effort put into both scenery and character designs. The humor in this movie is rather hit and miss. Most of the jokes are either bird puns or pop culture references. “Angry Birds” might elicit a few chuckles but it isn’t laugh-out-loud funny. Although the movie does have a plot, “Angry Birds” brings nothing new to the table. I am of the opinion that you can make a good movie out of any source if there’s a lot of effort put into it. For example, everybody (including myself) thought that “The Lego Movie” was going to be a huge mess. Thankfully, it turned out to be one of the best movies of 2014.  However, it seems that the screenwriter of this movie tried to put together a script for this movie by scraping at the bottom for material.  Most of the cast does a fine job with the voices even though there aren’t any stand-outs. The same goes for the characters of the movie.

Although harmless, “The Angry Birds Movies” is your generic post-Shrek animated movie. Despite this, it’s slightly better than the “Ratchet and Clank” movie. Just slightly.

SCORE: 2.5/5
