Ridley Scott finally returned to the Alien franchise after three decades to direct Prometheus, a prequel to 1979’s Alien. While it had an overall positive reception amongst film critics, fans of the franchise were rather split. Will Covenant win back the fans?
Michael Fassbender pretty much steals this movie as the androids David and Walter respectively. Fassbender plays the former with a subtle hint of menace while he plays the latter as a newer model. Both Danny McBride and Katherine Waterson were the other standouts in this movie. However, the rest of the cast seem to exist just to be Xenomorph bait.
Despite some of the film’s questionable dialogue (e.g. “I’ll do the fingering”), Covenant had an intriguing story. While Prometheus was all about the questions concerning our purpose in the universe, this movie is all about the answers. This film does a fine job expanding the Alien universe. While Prometheus was a film that relied more on atmosphere, Covenant is a more action-oriented film that is in a similar vein to Aliens.
Just like its predecessor, Covenant will be a love it or hate it film. Personally, I felt that the good outweighed the bad in this case.
